Personally, I am very VERY pleased that this horrible showmanship "clap-along-with-Bach" style of playing has practically vanished. Awful stuff, devoid of everything except dexterity - including, alas, musicianship.

Organists criticise Fox for his unconventional interpretations but the fact remains that, unusually for a performer (as distinct from a composer), Virgil Fox memorial recitals and concerts continued to be staged more than a quarter-century after his death. His impact is unassailable. |

A pointless racket. Awful. If you listen carefully, Handel is in there somewhere. |

Awful. Like a cheap music-box on steroids. |

For any newcomer to organ music, this is the most striking of pieces. Fox's version, the fastest in the Organlive library, is all the more memorable.

Ridiculous tempo! "Many organists play it at a very fast tempo whereas Widor preferred a more controlled articulation to be involved."
By: Brian on Feb, 01 2012
Utterly pointless "I can play it faster than you!" showing off which completely trashes the music and degrades it to a meaningless, twitching racket.
By: churchmouse on Mar, 11 2012
Times change. Everything has become fast-paced in this and the last century. Hymns are usually sung faster in church. I don't think it's a matter of showing off, but we still need to slow down a bit!
