Definitely pre-renovation in its shriekiness. Recording date=1994, renovation by Schantz finished about 2007 (see specification). Amazing it worked as well as it did, since the story preceding the spec said the organ was declared unusable in 2001. The performance is fun and freely ornamented, though.

I must point out that the Skinner pre-renovation was not always shrieky. While none are available on Organlive,there are several good recordings by Wolfgang Rubsam which show the Skinner sound,especially the reeds to great effect. His website even features the Widor Symphony No. 3 Final. https://www.wolfgangrubsam.com/listen I realize something had to be done,but I don't agree with everything that was done in the renovation. |
