This variation may seem clever and different, but it jars for those who just want to hear the original much-loved work.

I first heard this, like many of you, on television as the theme music for MASTERPIECE THEATER. I must say that I very much enjoy Mr. Dickey's improvised ornaments and various surprises in his performance!

Stodgy and plodding. It's already hackneyed and this doesn't help one bit.

By: stlorganist on Aug, 23 2012

Have attempted this piece on different organs with different transcriptions and it just does not work. Futile yet Valiant effort.

By: vause on Jan, 10 2013

I won't be harsh on this (great organ and room), but this piece is definitely overplayed in all mediums.

Nice, but a little too fast.

Excellent tempo for this piece! Many organists play it too fast and miss the sixteenth note part of the fanfare figure in the left hand. It's all here in this recording.

By: stlorganist on Jan, 20 2017

Agreed great tempo but I think some of the grandeur is lost when the pedal tones are too staccato...IMHO.

Terrible, over-fiddly and arthritic trumpet part on an ear-grating stop with a Wurlitzer-style backing. Awful.

Drones on rather painfully without much life until eventually, it expires completely.

Richard Ellsasser is presumed to be the author of the famous Rondo in G for organ, falsely attributed to John Bull.

By: jfk1961 on Aug, 24 2012

Fake or not, it's still a marvelous piece to listen to. Full of joy & playfulness!

By: MusicDonor2014 on Jul, 30 2015

FAKE? That's not the correct term for mistaken attribution, jfk1961. The music is real as in REALITY. It is not FAKE !!

By: jfk1961 on Apr, 05 2016

@MusicDonor2014: Yet another personal attack? Fake seems a better choice of word. Since Mr. Ellsasser is the presumed composer, he made a fake attribution to John Bull. Whereas, unscrupulous publishers and copyists still falsely attribute Trumpet Voluntary to Henry Purcell, not Jeremiah Clarke.

By: jfk1961 on Apr, 05 2016

@MusicDonor2014: (continued) Only you could take offense at my simple comment that it is a great piece whoever wrote it! Please stop the personal attacks upon me!
